Usually I wait until I finish a book to write about it but I think I’m going to try something new with Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. I just finished chapter three of the book and I’m already questioning my preconceived notions about Steve Jobs.
I’ve long held that Jobs is an asshole and, while I exclusively use the products of the company that he founded, I feel like he never actually built anything. Wozniak built everything, Jobs just knew how to get him to do it and how to sell it. I haven’t gotten to the part where Jobs stiffs Wozniak for making Breakout for Atari but that is my main reason for hating Jobs. It’s just indicative of the kind of guy he is. Call me naive but it’s always pissed me off that one of the most significant figures of the twentieth century dicked over his friend like that.
But so far in the book, he is fascinating. There’s something about reading about his childhood and his conflict over being adopted that makes me feel for him, or at least not immediately think that he’s an asshole.
So, I’m interested to see if I still think he’s a dick after I finish. I will keep you posted.
