I take for granted that I’m a part of a few communities in New York filled with people making stuff. This occurred to me, selfishly, this week as two podcasts that I was in were released. I’m a fan of both podcasts and you should check them out. It got me thinking that I’ve got some friends who’ve been doing cool stuff lately and you should check them all out if you can.
Other Men Need Help
Mark Pagan is a fixture on the New York Storytelling scene. I’ve always loved his stories and it’s great that he’s taken his voice into podcasting. Other Men Need Help is a great podcast about men and vulnerability and the kind of things we don’t necessarily think of when we talk about masculinity but we probably should. Why can’t we ever ask a buddy, “Duder, how do I look in these pants?” Mark’s latest episode asks that very question. (I provide some voices.)

Nazis and Me
David Lawson is another NYC Storytelling luminary. He runs the Astoria Bookshop Storytelling show on the first Thursday of every month. It’s a great show and worth checking out. But his output is inspiring. He’s put out three one man shows in the past few years. I saw No Oddjob about his love of video games and What the Hell, DC? about his hometown but his new show, Nazis and Me digs a little deeper. It’s personal and political and really entertaining. Get tickets for his the last two shows of his run on November 6th and 13th at 7:00PM at Under St. Mark’s Theater.
KBizzle
Katy Berry is a comedian and rapper. She plays with me every Wednesday in Sexy Baby at the Magnet Theater. She’s made a lot of great videos. Some are songs. Some are episodes in a web series. Check out her videos here but first, check out her latest, “We’re Witches Now.” (I like the Fairuza Balk actress. She’s cute.)
And if you like witch themed comedic songs, catch her show with VVitches at Caveat on Oct 27 at 11:59PM.
Happy Hour Story Hour
Julia Whitehouse’s weekly storytelling open mike was the first one that I ever went to when I started telling stories. I’ve been going since it was in the UCB East, then that weird bar on 30th Street, and finally in what I hope is its permanent home, The Duplex. This show isn’t new, it’s been going for about four years but sometimes you just realize, “Hey, that show’s pretty great.” I realized this at my own storytelling show Storytelling at Halyards when a guy new to storytelling and New York got up to tell a story. He came up to me after the show and asked, “Hey where should I go to do this?” And the first thing out of my mouth was Happy Hour Story Hour. Go tell a story. Go listen. Every Monday at The Duplex in the West Village at 7:00PM.
Don’t Mind If I Don’t
Aaron Gold doesn’t like a lot of things but he’s willing to be swayed. He invites guests on his show to convince him to try new things or like things that he doesn’t. I was on to get him not to like but to finish The Wire. Convincing someone to finish The Wire is honestly something I never thought I’d have to do. And I don’t think I did a very good job. But check this episode out and follow the podcast on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and GooglePlay.
