Soft Serve, Stanley, and Taking Blood
No Comments

I’m still riding that wave of being a little too sick for work but too well to stay home. I always err on the side of work in those cases. I am the reason that colds spread, though, I’ve been trying to not to touch too much stuff. That makes me a good person, right?

Last night the Washington Capitals beat the Las Vegas Golden Knights to come within one game of their first Stanley Cup. It’s fun to start watching a team just reaching their peak. It’s also completely unfair to their fanbase. If the Bills ever win a Super Bowl,* remind me that I stopped caring after high school.

*The Bills will never win a Super Bowl.

I’m pretty sad about Kate Spade. I know very little about her except for her namesake handbags and that she’s David Spade’s sister in law. But it’s still very sad when someone dies too young like that. (I’m clearly trying not to mention suicide even though that’s the reason it’s so upsetting.)

Let’s take a breath here before switching gears. I didn’t want to end on that so I put it in the middle. Perhaps it was a strange pacing choice. Okay, let’s proceed.

Ready?

This article about the USMNT from The Ringer was pretty fascinating. The article explicitly mentions Geoff Cameron’s feud with Bruce Arena in the last few games of the qualifiers. I wrote Geoff Cameron on US Soccer a few months back when he told his side of the story. From any side, though, the US will not be in the World Cup this year and we have a long way to go before we can really compete in that tournament.

Let me check the Mets score and… yeah, that’s about right. A loss to the Orioles. Jesus Christ.

The soft serve guy outside of work recognized me today. When I was a kid and I watched movies, people always had walk into a place and have the usual. I never had a usual. Middle schoolers rarely have usuals anywhere, not even the lunch ladies would remember that I wanted tater tots. Everyone wanted tater tots. That’s not a usual. But I hadn’t been to this guy since last summer and today he remembered me. I don’t know. I thought it was cool.

I had improv rehearsal tonight and we got the note to always be good at the thing you’re doing in a scene. It reminded me of this piece of advice I got from Ian Roberts once. He had said something about always going to something real. I said, “Yeah but what if you know nothing about it?”

“Like what?” he asked.

“Medical stuff,” I said.

“Well, you know something, right? What do you know about doctors?”

“I don’t know, they, uh, they take blood.”

“Okay, that’s all you need. Doctor, I’m not feeling well. Okay, we’ll take some blood. Doctor, I think I broke my arm. Okay, come on in, we’ll take some blood and check you out. Doctor, I have these really strange dreams… Huh, I think we’re going to have to take some blood…

It was good advice and I always remembered it. (And when he gave it to me, it was pretty damn funny.)
