I have to get up at 5:30 tomorrow to take the 4 train to 161st Street-Yankees Stadium for the Bronx 10 Miler. Ironic that I’m writing about Yankee Stadium right now while David Wright’s last Mets game plays out. Hopefully it’s just his last Mets start tonight because I’ll be at the last game of the season tomorrow. He can still pinch hit, right?
I’ll probably bring A Game of Thrones to read on the train. I’m all in on this whole show/phenomenon now. I went to Barnes and Noble today to get books 2 and 3. I’m going to finish season 2 of the show tonight then take a break from the show to read through book 3, then go back to the show. I take my geekery seriously and, thus, plan accordingly.
The worst part about these early morning races is the night before. I always sleep badly because I’m afraid I’ll sleep through the race or get up too late to get there on time. So, I sleep lightly. My eyes are closed but I never really get any decent deep sleep. I just look over at the clock or check my phone and see, okay, cool, another hour in the dark has passed, at least I have three more hours to try to sleep, then two, then one, then I’m up and out the door.
So, as I said, tomorrow I’ll be running ten miles in the Bronx, which, incidentally is my eighth of nine races that I need to qualify for the New York City Marathon in 2019. Then I’m heading to the last Mets game of the season, which will also be my first game of the season both because I was distracted by the World Cup and because the Mets have been horrible except for the first couple of weeks this year. So, I’ll wake up in Brooklyn, go to the Bronx, then head to Queens. That’s three boroughs in a day. My train also goes through Manhattan. If I hop out for a coffee after my race, that’ll be four boroughs in a day. So, just for the hell of it, I’m going to ride the Staten Island Ferry tomorrow just to hit all five.
An arbitrary goal, sure, but, hey, have you done it? And it’s an excuse to see the city. That’s all I’ve got tonight.
